Ordering the cake for your wedding day can seem to be a mind-boggling job, with so many things to consider, from design ideas to what flavours to have.
But here are a few handy hints from Batch 17 Bakes, to help guide you through the cakey maze, to blissful baked perfection!
It’s all in the details
Bespoke handmade wedding cakes offer you a world of possibilities when it comes to designing your perfect cake! Gone are the days of having to have tiers of fruit cake and huge elaborate royal icing details - today’s cakes are all about you.
When thinking about your design, take inspiration from anywhere – what means the most to you as a couple? Is it a hobby or shared interest? Would you like some of your dress or invitation details on the cake? Can we match your flowers? The more information you can give to your cake designer, the better, no matter how random you think it may be! The personal touch on your cake will make all the difference.
It’s a matter of taste
Ah fruit cake, the most divisive of cake flavours! Current trends are certainly leaning towards having flavoured sponge over our dear old favourite. But this is not the end for our traditional cake, as now many people are mixing things up, and having multiple flavours in their cakes! Having a choice of flavours certainly is a popular option for the happy couple, as well as your guests - especially if you choose to serve your cake as part of your evening buffet, as there will be a little something for everyone!
And it is a myth that if you are mixing sponge and fruit tiers that the bottom tier has to be the fruit – in fact a popular option at the moment is to have it as the smallest top tier! So you can have your cake, and eat it too….
Does size matter?
When it comes to deciding on your cake design, it’s the number of guests you want to feed that will help your designer determine things like number of tiers. Having your heart set on a 4 tiered cake for only 50 people, might be a little tricky for example.
But there are options such as adding dummy tiers to increase the size, if your heart is set on that big statement cake, or using raised separators between tiers to create the illusion of height. Talk to your designer, and let them guide you to the perfect design that will fit your wedding.
Money isn't everything
And finally, be honest about your budget. Any designer worth their salt would much rather help you create the perfect cake that’s going to suit your budget, rather than design a hugely elaborate cake that you can’t afford!
There are so many options to add details in different ways to a cake, that cost really isn't a limit. A single bold statement flower and some gorgeous ribbon can be just as beautiful as a huge cascade of sugar flowers.
